Like many, I often find myself caught in the whirlwind of daily tasks - ticking off to-do lists, meeting deadlines, and staying busy. Despite the constant activity, there was always a sense that something was missing. It wasn’t a lack of productivity but the feeling of moving through life on autopilot - checking boxes without genuine fulfilment.
Recently, I was inspired to revisit Ikigai after coming across a reel on Instagram. This book had initially sparked my interest in non-fiction, but this time, its message struck a deeper chord. As I turned the pages, I realised I had been drifting - moving from one task to the next without truly connecting with what resonated within me.
If you’ve ever worked out, you might be familiar with the concept of the ‘mind-muscle connection’ - the practice of being fully present in each movement. It dawned on me that this principle could extend far beyond the gym. By bringing mindfulness into daily activities - whether working, cooking, or conversing - even the most routine moments could transform into meaningful, intentional experiences.
What is Ikigai?
In Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life, Héctor García and Francesc Miralles explore the Japanese concept of ikigai, or "reason for being." Rooted in Okinawan culture, where people are known for their exceptional longevity, ikigai is seen as essential to health and happiness. This purpose-driven philosophy reminds us that we don’t need to abandon routines or chase grand achievements to find fulfilment. Instead, we can align our lives with activities that reflect our inner values.
Ikigai is built on four foundational elements:
1. What you love (passion)
2. What you’re good at (profession)
3. What the world needs (mission)
4. What you can be rewarded for (vocation)
When these intersect, they form ikigai—a unique purpose that brings contentment both to the individual and to the community.
Introducing Niksen: The Art of Doing Nothing
While ikigai encourages intentional living, its counterpart in Dutch philosophy - Niksen - invites us to pause and simply "do nothing." In a world fixated on productivity, Niksen teaches the value of stillness, where we allow the mind to wander without pressure or judgment.
At first glance, ikigai and Niksen might seem contradictory. Yet, when combined, they create a harmonious balance: ikigai provides the purpose, while Niksen allows the space to reflect and reconnect with that purpose. By embracing both, we move from a state of autopilot to a rhythm of intentional living interspersed with restorative pauses.

A Holistic Approach: Mind, Body, and Soul
Living with purpose and practicing stillness require balance across the mind, body, and soul:
The Mind - Our minds are central to discovering and nurturing our ikigai. By silencing external distractions and creating moments of Niksen, we make space for introspection and clarity. This calm fosters focus and intentionality in pursuing what truly matters.
The Body - In Okinawa, purpose naturally encourages physical well-being. Engaging in meaningful activities promotes movement, healthy habits, and relaxation. Similarly, Niksen can serve as an antidote to stress, allowing our bodies to rest and recharge.
The Soul - Connecting with ikigai anchors us in a deeper sense of meaning, while moments of stillness restore our inner harmony. Practicing gratitude - a key aspect of ikigai - helps us overcome self-doubt and embrace challenges with an open heart. Niksen complements this by providing the mental freedom to dream, reflect, and recalibrate.
My Personal Experiences: Practicing Ikigai and Niksen
Joy in Everyday Tasks - Focusing on what I love has turned simple activities - like cooking, writing, and organising - into moments of satisfaction. Practicing Niksen alongside has allowed me to relish the quiet in-between moments, appreciating life’s simplicity.
A Renewed Perspective on Growth - Ikigai taught me that purpose evolves. Combined with Niksen, I’ve learned to embrace stillness as a space for growth, curiosity, and self-compassion.
A Meaningful Approach to Life - Rather than seeking escape, ikigai helps me confront challenges directly. Niksen, meanwhile, acts as a mental reset, offering clarity when life feels overwhelming.
Together, they’ve made my journey more engaged and intentional.
How You Can Embrace Ikigai and Niksen
Pause and Observe - Being mindful of your emotions and actions can invite deeper self-awareness. Ask yourself: Why am I engaging in this task? Is it out of habit, expectation, or genuine desire?
Infuse Intention - Transform your routine by aligning your actions with what truly matters to you. Whether it's cooking or a professional project, bring presence and purpose into the moment.
Embrace Stillness - Carve out time for Niksen - even a few minutes of doing nothing can offer surprising clarity. These pauses are not wasted; they nurture creativity, resilience, and joy.
As the book says, “The secret to a long and happy life lies in living with intention and joy.” By blending the purposeful living of ikigai with the restorative practice of Niksen, we can enrich our inner lives and the world around us. Perhaps, the key to fulfilment isn’t doing more or less but doing it all with mindful presence and genuine joy.

Every bit of this piece makes so much sense.
ReplyDeleteFrom a young age, we are conditioned to stay constantly occupied—whether it’s completing homework, playing with toys, or the ever-popular directive to "go play with your friends." We’re placed into a lifelong race of staying busy, striving to be productive, and comparing ourselves to others. While these habits are undoubtedly valuable, what’s often overlooked is the importance of “pausing to reflect” and “finding contentment in our achievements”. These two crucial practices are something the current generation could greatly benefit from embracing.
A beautifully written exploration of the delicate balance between purposeful living and restorative stillness. This article wonderfully highlights how embracing both ikigai and Niksen can lead to a more intentional and fulfilling life. A must-read for anyone seeking harmony in the hustle and bustle of modern times.
